There are many things new people like me need to find out to make a move to the Philippines as painless as possible. For example, I've heard Subic is really nice, especially for Expats. But not sure where to look to get some ideas about amenities and prices. Al;so, how do you get your mail forwarded to your new Philippine address? Setting up a bank account is probably simple. But, what is the best bank? Also, I know there are a couple shipping companies here in the US that send big boxes there for very low costs. Which one is best to use? So, is there anywhere I can go to get some of these answers? I'm planning my move in 2012, maybe late summer. So, I want to be prepared. Thanks to anyone for your help.

Sitting on the beach in Dauin, Negros Oriental, you'll see Apo Island, famous for scuba diving.  It's near Dumaguete.  Actually although we lived very close, we never once went there.

There is no official bottle deposit, but from time to time somebody might just wander by your house and offer to buy your bottles.  What they will do with those?  Probably resell them to someone else who needs them!

Just how dangerious is it here?   I had no idea there were large numbers of Americans being murdered in Cebu and other areas. As I have just arrived here in Cebu to consider a permanent move here I would like to know the true risks involved.  Paradise to me is not packing and looking around every corner.

I just read http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/25/world/asia/25phils.html?src=mv and not sure what to think. After murdering dozens of people in cold blood, Suwaib Upham was himself murdered, presumably by the others involved in the murder who had fired alongside him in Mindanao.  Does he die as a hero because he was going to testify against the others, or has he got what was coming to him for participating in those gruesome murders?
