What is a good time of year to visit the Phillipines?

My husband and our 3 children would like to take trip to the Phillipines this year.  We are very flexible with our dates because our children are homeschooled.  I would like to know what time of year is best?

Also, I know some Tagalog but I would like to learn more.  What would be a good language program to use.

Thank you for your help!

baggage allowance from hong kong to philippines - airline recommendation?

We have tickets to get to Hong Kong, but from there we will have to get tickets to Philippines - Manila, Dumaguete, or Cebu.  I would like to travel with some heavy baggage (we're allowed a huge baggage allowance on the flight to Hong Kong).

But I just checked into the baggage regulations on Cebu Pacific.  Apparently there is a 15kg allowance per person.  After that it's 2000php for each 5kg.  So if we have even just 50kg extra between the two of us, that's 20,000php: $400.

Anyone have any experience or advice how to get from Hong Kong to the phils with heavy bags?

safe everywhere except

yes your life is safe everywhere

except

- most of manila outside of malate, ermita and makati

- cebu at night

- most of mindanao outside of dipolog, cdo and davao

in general the pi is quite safe. i rode my bike from luzon/mindoro/negros/cebu/mindanao/cebu/bohol/leyte/samar/sorsogon and never encountered any major problems. the greatest danger is imposed by traffic.

violent crime happens very often in manila, cebu and mindanao. most crime does not affect foreigners, but in the last years violent crime against foreigners is picking up. many foreigners got robbed and shot in cebu last year.

Shuffling threw the Texas sand............

mabuhay, I am a new member here, a Kano currently in Texas and dreaming of the day I can return to the Philippines. I am an artist (read; poor!) But in a little over a year I will be able to draw mmy social security pitance (less than a $1000. U.S.d) I could not even afford to starve on that here, but I can live in the RP, which I fell in love with while there two years ago, on that.

mindanao

does anyone know about the flooding in cdo? what areas are flooded?

i have also heard that most parts of mindanao are still without power because of the bombing of the central electricity plant. does power work in davao/in cdo?

davao and cdo were the only places in davao that i did consider being safe. davao is in fact the only place where i could live because i do not tolerate pollution and only in davao it is illegal to pollute and only in davao it is also enforced. people get arrested in davao even when they sit outside a mall and pollute. this is excellent. problem is what happens after the mayor retires in 2010 ?

Living A Simple and Meaningful Family Life in The Philippines

A Week From My Notes From 2005: Living A Simple Life with my Family

Today, 30 April 2005, I took my five children (12,9,8,4,2), my wife, two maids, and nine other neighbors, children, and cousins, total of 18 people, to the Rock Springs River Resort in Jasaan, about 25K east of our home in Cagayan de Oro.

The mountain resort has three stream fed swimming pools. Entrance fee is P20 per person = P360. Two cabanas on the wooded terrace overlooking the main pool were P100 each.

The food we brought with us, rice, chicken, spaghetti, pancit canton, stewed beef, 1/2 case of beer, and 3 gal of orange drink added P650 to our/my expenses.

Some Musings on Relationships, Love, Whatever: Ten Years In

Relationships, Love, Whatever

Some musings on relationships, love, whatever: ten year success story.

I write this after lending my wife P6,500 to assist with her OFW brother's hospital payment for his wife. To be repaid by him.

I also write this in response to many posts who have declared they have found the love of their life, and they could no longer live without her. Whatever she wants, whatever she asks, is hers.

The alternative to that is suicide, which is always an option, but one I have never considered.

I wanted to be a father, and have a family. I met a girl with a four month old son and married her. Am I "in love" with her?

Yahoo Ag Groups From Philippines (Also Gardening Brochure Download)

One worthwhile yahoo group is http://asia.groups.yahoo.com/group/philventures/ .  Several members are in the Philippines and actually trying to grow things.  As they tell you, it's not trivial.

If you are interested in tilapia, yahoo has a tilapia group with many members in the Philippines.

This yahoo group is about jatropha - mostly well-known for being an oil-producing plant that can be grown in the tropics and used for lamp oil or biodiesel: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/tubanggatong/ .
