water buffalo ("caribou")

The locals call them caribou, but in English the proper name is water buffalo.

Locals don't call them

Locals don't call them "caribou" - they call them carabao.   I just thought that I'd correct you before you made the world think the locals didn't know what they were talking about.    In other southeast asian countries like malaysia, the name is similar - kerbau, etc.

So, please - when you're in another country, do some more research on the local customs, and certainly don't announce to the world that the locals don't know the difference between a "caribou" and a carabao.
